The Goody Awards was honored to present a Golden Goody Award (like an Oscar for social good) to the David Fields, Executive Director, Society of St Vincent de Paul, and his team for their Hike 4 the Homeless event and continued support of families in Los Angeles, where 10% of the US homeless population lives.

On a bright, sunny morning with 400+ hikers raising money for the homeless in Griffith Park in Los Angeles, CA, the Goody Awards was honored to present a Golden Goody Award (our top humanitarian award) to the David Fields, Executive Director, Society of St Vincent de Paul, and his team for their Hike 4 the Homeless event and continued support of families in Los Angeles, where 10% of the US homeless population lives.

We captured the action in this Video: Golden Goody Award – Hike 4 the Homeless –Society of St Vincent de Paul, where Liz H Kelly, CEO/Founder Goody Awards, kicks off the ceremony, and then Actor Vincent De Paul (The Artist) makes the presentation to David Fields. Also in the video, Board President Claire Padama and Councilman Tom LaBonge (District 4), hikers, Dani Bowman (Golden Goody Winner for Goody Awards Autism Acceptance Month Campaign), and Actors Zach Callison (Prince James in Disney’s Sofia the First), Julianna Rose (Khumba), Jennessa Rose (Little Miss Sunshine), and Isabelle Rae Thomas (Brothers and Sisters.)

With big cheers for the great work they do, Actor Vincent De Paul presented the award to David Fields, “I am honored to recognize David Fields with a Golden Goody Award for this Hike for the Homeless and continued dedication and leadership in the Los Angeles, Ventura and Santa Barbara Counties, where he strives to bring love, justice and joy to the people he meets. The Society of Saint Vincent de Paul is a national organization that has been providing programs and services for 100 years that support children, the homeless and the poor. Their mission is to unite families together, help society in a positive way, and to enrich the lives of those who are in need. Thank you Mr. Fields and The Society of St Vincent de Paul.”

This Catholic organization runs several homeless shelters in the Los Angeles area, including a shelter in skid row, which is a 50 square block area with 4,000-5,000 people sleeping in shelters every night. In this skid row area, homelessness is up 14% since 2009. The group also manages a winter shelter in Ventura County, and several small housing projects supporting the homeless.

The Society of St Vincent De Paul also works in tandem with the Los Angeles housing department to assist families, men, and women to locate, secure, and maintain housing. During this process, the organization also provides support for employment, mental health and healthcare, and a variety of needs. The Society of St Vincent De Paul stores also accept donations for the homeless, and items are sold at a low cost to support these programs and provide to families in need.
